Floor & Decor, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, is a leading specialty retailer in the hard surface flooring market that offers a broad selection of ceramic, stone, tile, wood, and laminate flooring. The company currently operates 40 retail stores in 16 metropolitan markets across the United States. Stores typically range in size from 60,000 to 100,000 square feet.
Each of the retail locations has four checkout lanes and managers noticed that customers were not being efficiently moved throughout the checkout process. Michael Pastorius, Facilities Manager at Floor & Decor, decided to conduct a time and labor management study to understand the underlying causes. The study results indicated that customers could not determine which registers were open and which ones were closed, creating a traffic flow problem. Knowing that traffic flow had to be improved at the checkout registers, the company turned to the Internet to find a solution.

Pastorius began researching checkout lights on Google, and D&P Custom Lights & Wiring Systems Inc. was the first company that popped up during his search. He immediately contacted Neil Aportadera, D&P’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “My initial conversation with Neil was good. After speaking with Neil and explaining to him what I wanted, I felt a level of comfort and knew he could help us solve our problem. I knew I had found the right company to help us with our traffic flow problem.”
Floor & Decor needed a little something out of the ordinary for their checkout lighting system. In addition to power poles to transport power to the new checkout lights, they also needed a multi-use checkout shade with two switches. The switches are activated to indicate to shoppers not only when the checkout lane is open, but can also be switched to turn a standard checkout lane into one open only for returns and exchanges.
In addition to their checkout light and power pole needs, Floor & Decor also expressed interest in D&P’s custom ACLinx™ Modular Wiring System to be used to power several fixture displays throughout new and remodeled stores. D&P’s pre-wired modular components were designed and manufactured specifically for the company, allowing for easy configuration. This system also allows Floor & Decor to make floor changes quickly and easily when remodeling or updating stores, thus reducing installation and labor costs.
After discussing all of Floor & Decor’s customization needs, D&P’s design team got to work to come up with the right solution. Neil provided Michael with several options to choose from and after some tweaking together, Neil and Michael came up with the right design.
The project ran smoothly and the new checkout lights and power poles were delivered on time as promised. Since Pastorius spends approximately 250 days a year traveling to all the Floor & Decor locations, he indicated that he really did not have much time to spend on renovation or construction projects, and relies heavily on his vendors.
“Neil has basically taken over for me to make sure that everything gets done correctly in getting these checkout lights and power poles into the right locations so I don’t have to worry about it. I completely trusted Neil and D&P to get the project done and they delivered.”
Asked if he would work with D&P again and recommend the company to others, Pastorius said “Absolutely, they will not find this kind of service and customization anywhere else!” Among some of the benefits of working together with D&P that he mentioned are the ability to customize the products so uniquely, competitive pricing, industry knowledge, and one-on-one responsive customer service.
